Central Illinois Transit Provider Announces Complete Service Restoration Since Pandemic

The Champaign-Urbana (IL) Mass Transit District (MTD) recently announced the final phase of service restorations, which went into effect on August 23. This milestone marks a full restoration of MTD’s pre-pandemic service levels for routes that operate on the campus of the University of Illinois and throughout the community.

“In December 2023, MTD restored over 100 weekly service hours, which included both campus and community routes. With the start of the summer service in May 2024, MTD restored the non-UI schedule to full frequencies with over 130 hours added per week to fixed-route service in the community,” according to a press release. “With this final phase, both UI and non-UI service has been restored to help our community thrive.

“MTD has not operated with full UI-service since 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and subsequent operator shortages. We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by our customers and community throughout the recovery process. Our Operations, Human Resources, and Safety & Training Departments worked hard to recruit, hire, train, and retain top talent to serve the public.”
